The dispute is related to the interpretation of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling signed in 1946. The specific object and the purpose of the Con¬ven¬tion – the protection of different species of whales, led the International Court of Justice to a very strict interpretation of cases when whales’ protection can be limited.
