Ion GÂLEA, Associate Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Bucharest, Recent Developments in International Law on Maritime Delimitations: The Judgment of the International Court of Justice of 2 February 2018 in the Costa Rica – Nicaragua Case
Abstract: This study briefly examines the most important developments in the field of the international law concerning maritime delimitations that could be noticed in the judgment of the International Court of Justice of 2 February 2018, in the joint cases Maritime Delimitation in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean and Land Boundary in the Northern Part of Isla Portillos (Costa Rica v. Nicaragua). The main purpose of the study is to acknowledge the fact that the International Court of Justice maintains its methodology which was made clear in the Maritime Delimitation in the Black Sea Case (Romania v. Ukraine) and to observe the way in which the Court applies this methodology, particularly with respect to the adjustment of the provisional equidistance line in the context of the special circumstances.
